Since you were using EEVEE you could have used the Shader to RGB node with a simple Diffuse shader to make a mask for the shadows of the Earth

Great work - there is an addon for blender called 'Baga Rain Generator' when installed you literally can select any object and, with one click, add rain and rain splashes to it. It works really well and saves times.
